This morning, Sarah and I walked from (Sanibel) Beach Access 7, to Bowman’s Beach. As stated in previous posts, this walk is one of our favorites, and today’s was the nicest YET. The temperature and breeze were a perfect compliment to the clarity and color of the water. The shell piles were plentiful […]
The beach above is between access 7 and Bowman’s beach. Sarah and I have walked to Bowman’s a few times, and every time, we find excellent shells and enjoy a special (and somewhat rare) feeling of isolation. We call this area “lost beach”.
This photo was taken on September 1, 2013. To the Islanders, September means quiet. Even on this Labor Day weekend, as you can see in this picture, you won’t find many people on the West Gulf beaches.
Anybody who frequents our beaches has seen shell displays on, or near the beaches without an owner . . . no guardian, gatherer, or arranger (artist). Artist and audience separated . . . forever. We have a name for the arrangements “left behind” – “PSD(s)” (public shell display(s)). PSDs are awesome! A […]
I have been trying to photograph the moon for a week now, and every time I am able to do so, it descends behind the trees of or neighborhood. So, last night I finally got a clear shot at it! I remember living “in the city” and missing the moon. The skies were too […]
Sarah works at a popular retail store out here (on Sanibel) and hears the complaint “they’re aren’t any shells out there” . . . often. Or, the comment “every year there are less and less shells”. Nonsense! I took this picture just yesterday. PILES of shells – literally! The fact is, you never really […]
Still looking like the Dunube river near the lighthouse. Head west for saltwater, east for river water.
Last night I visited with my mother, and we went over very old photographs that were needed for a special project which I hope all of you see in the near future. I was looking specifically for a photo of my parents together – you know, in the frame . . . together. Easy right? […]
The Gulf is so peaceful most of the time that I forget the few days in a year year when it is quite ANGRY. This post is dedicated to those “angry” moments. JB
We took a walk on the beach around access #2 during a super low tide. I was walking along the shore, right up where the surf comes in, just looking around at the sand…you know…shelling…when I suddenly saw a flurry of movement in the sand. It took my brain a second to register what I […]
Ok, I made another video of the flying object. I have watched it many, many times. I have included my best guess in this blog post. If anybody has a better guess, let’s hear it! JB
Pictures from beach access #7 JB
While the sancapstar.com shell guide is being processed and correctly inserted into our webpage, I have posted it into the blog so it may be used in the meantime. The following shells are represented as seen in the 2013 edition of the Sanibel Captiva Handbook. This is a work in progress- Thank you, JB
Lately, there have been reported incidences of large saw fish being caught off Sanibel beaches. While I have never heard of this before, I do know several people who have caught saw fish . . . but always in the Caloosahatchee River – which if you travel it far enough east, you will wind up […]
I was at Lowes the other day and could not help filing through this display. Do you see the spiny jewel box? In all honesty, there is a shell identification guide for sale on the Islands that lists this shell as a “good find” indicating that it is of medium difficulty to find. JB […]
Yesterday, Sarah and I came upon a herd of fighting conchs who were “adjusting” to a super-low tide. I was able to get this video with my phone. These guys travel together, are herbivores, have a trunk like a elephant and eyes – COOL! They are called fighting conchs due to the fact that if […]
Sandwich Terns at the lighthouse. JB
Folks, tonight I visited my engineer. During our meeting, our focus side-tracked to shelling (they are REAL ISLANDERS too) and I wound up with two two new beauties. One is a Coffee Bean Trivia, the other ????? Nice finds today! JB
Just sharing my favorite photograph from beach access six today.
